Following the disaster that struck Japan on March 11, 2011, we at JCIE were amazed at the generosity shown by old friends and new acquaintances alike. Individuals and organizations around the world went to great lengths to help by contributing to JCIE’s Japan NGO Earthquake Relief & Recovery Fund as well as to other disaster funds managed by JCIE.
More than $1.7 million was contributed to the Japan NGO Earthquake Relief & Recovery Fund by individuals, corporations, schools, churches, and philanthropic foundations. The range of people who have organized special fundraising drives is extraordinary—from American schoolchildren to Japanese artists to healthcare professionals in Taiwan.
Half of the funds contributed in the initial three months were designated for groups working on the ground to provide immediate relief and all of that amount—a total of $304,000—was distributed to 6 exemplary organizations. But the path to recovery after disasters like this is a long one, so we allocated the remaining funds entrusted to us to support more than 30 innovative organizations engaged in the recovery over the long term. These organizations are playing a critical, long-term role in rebuilding communities and helping people get back on their feet.
Meanwhile, other supporters aided the recovery by donating nearly $2 million through additional JCIE-managed funds, including the Bain Capital Japan Disaster Relief Fund and other initiatives. This heartfelt support has played a major role in helping the region get back on its feet, and for that we are extremely grateful.
